Earlier this month Governor Jay Inslee of Washington and Governor Kate Brown of Oregon voiced their support for California Governor Brown’s efforts to establish a regional system operator (RSO). Both Governors acknowledged in their letters to Gov. Brown the benefits such an integrated electric grid would provide their constituents. Gov. Inslee expressed his reasoning, writing, “an RSO would allow our utilities to capture benefits for their customers, improve efficiency and reliability, reduce costs and emissions, and contribute to the long-term economic health of our states .” Having the support of strong regional leaders in this way is going to be critical for making regional electric grid consolidation happen. The letters below are a significant step towards the formation of a western RSO.
